The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, following the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced adjustments to statutory pre-election timelines.
Under the revised schedule, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, 16th January 2027, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are rescheduled for Saturday, 6th February 2027.
The Commission also announced that the Osun State Governorship election, initially slated for 8th August 2026, will now take place on 15th August 2026. INEC clarified that while some activities for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections have been conducted, remaining activities will proceed strictly in line with the Electoral Act, 2026.
Key milestones in the revised timetable include:
-
Party primaries and resolution of disputes from 23rd April to 30th May 2026.
-
Presidential and National Assembly campaigns commencing on 19th August 2026.
-
Governorship and State Houses of Assembly campaigns beginning on 9th September 2026.
Campaigns are to end 24 hours before election day, and INEC warned political parties to adhere strictly to these timelines, noting that compliance will be enforced by law.
The revised timetable and schedule of activities are available on the Commission’s official website and other communication platforms. INEC called on all stakeholders to cooperate to ensure peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections that reflect the sovereign will of Nigerians.
The announcement was made by Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, on 26th February 2026.
