The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, along with its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Malam Mele Kyari, emerged triumphant at the 2023 Nigeria GovTech Awards, receiving recognition for outstanding service delivery in the public sector.
In a ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, the National Oil Company was honored with the Best Federal MDA in Digital Initiatives in Reengineering Government Processes Award. Simultaneously, GCEO Mele Kyari was presented with the Distinguished GovTech Trailblazer Award.
Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, Olufemi O. Soneye, stated that the accolades were a testament to the proactive leadership of the GCEO in implementing the Business Continuity Plan (BCP). This plan, centered on the digital automation of company processes, played a crucial role in ensuring operational efficiency, high performance, and the sustained functioning of NNPC Ltd’s operations in the post-pandemic era, earning Kyari the moniker “Mr. Automation” within the industry.
A pivotal move was the automation of the Key Performance Indicator Dashboard across the entire IT Enterprise and Architecture, enhancing real-time performance tracking and reporting efficiency. Additionally, Kyari’s activation of Microsoft Enterprise Additional Licenses for NNPC’s Digital Transformation initiatives resulted in an estimated cost-saving exceeding $1 million for the company.
The Nigeria GovTech Awards, organized by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), recognized government initiatives aimed at utilizing information and communication technology (ICT) to transform public service and enhance the well-being of Nigerians. The theme of this year’s event, “Advancing Public Service Reforms Through Digital Transformation,” highlighted the pivotal role played by technology in modern governance.
The selection process, anchored on merit, saw NNPC Ltd. and Mele Kyari surpassing other contenders in the public sector, reinforcing the credibility of the awards. Dasuki Arabi, Director-General of BPSR, commended Kyari for his innovative use of technology in driving business at NNPC Ltd and his exemplary leadership in advancing GovTech initiatives and digital governance within the nation’s oil conglomerate. He emphasized the awards’ role in positioning the Nigerian public service as a catalyst for reforms in the country.
The recognition came after a nationwide nomination and online voting process initiated through various media channels. In a letter dated September 19, 2023, Arabi informed NNPC Ltd’s GCEO of the organization’s selection for the prestigious Nigeria GovTech Award in the category of “Best Federal: MDA in digital initiatives in reengineering government processes.” The awards underscored NNPC Ltd. and Mele Kyari’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the public sector.
