The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the successful containment and recovery of one of its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) following a loss of communication link during a routine counter-insurgency mission.
According to the NAF, the UAV was deployed on 2nd January 2026, within the Operation FASAN YAMMA Sector 3 area when it experienced an unexpected loss of link. Efforts to re-establish communication were unsuccessful, prompting the crew to initiate standard emergency return-to-base procedures in line with established operational protocols.
The Air Force immediately activated coordinated response and recovery measures, working in collaboration with sister Services and relevant authorities. The platform has since been secured, while assessment and recovery operations are progressing as planned.
NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, stated that technical teams have taken control of the UAV and commenced preliminary evaluations in accordance with safety and operational guidelines.
He emphasized that no lives were lost during the incident and that military operations across all theatres remain unaffected. The NAF reassured the public of its continued professionalism and unwavering commitment to counter-insurgency operations in the interest of national security.
