NAFDAC destroys ₦55bn worth of substandard, unregistered products in Ibadan

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed regulated products valued at about ₦55 billion during a large-scale destruction exercise in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The destroyed items comprised unregistered, fake, banned, adulterated and expired products, including damaged and expired goods voluntarily submitted to the agency by more than 70 compliant companies, non-governmental organisations and trade unions.

Speaking at the exercise, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said the action was part of the agency’s sustained efforts to prevent dangerous and unwholesome products from re-entering the market and endangering public health.

Adeyeye called on religious and community leaders, health practitioners and the general public to intensify awareness campaigns within their communities on the dangers of patronising quacks and unauthorised dealers of medicines and food products. She stressed that safeguarding public health and safety requires collective responsibility and active collaboration by all stakeholders.
