Navy handsover 756kg suspected cannabis to NDLEA

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has handed over 18 bags of suspected cannabis sativa, weighing approximately 756 kilograms, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following a series of intelligence-led anti-narcotics operations in Lagos.

The handover, which took place on Friday, was performed by the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration in combating illicit drug trafficking and other transnational crimes within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The Navy said the seizure underscores its commitment to denying criminal networks the use of Nigeria’s coastal waters and adjoining communities as transit routes or safe havens for illegal drug operations.

According to the Navy, the consignments were intercepted during separate intelligence-driven operations conducted by the NNS BEECROFT Quick Response Team in collaboration with the Western Regional Control Centre, FALCON EYE.

Five bags of the suspected cannabis were recovered at Abule Osun on April 7, 2026, two bags were intercepted at Ikare Island on April 13, while another 11 bags were seized at Alfa Beach on July 15, bringing the total recovery to 18 bags.

The Navy attributed the successful operations to sustained maritime surveillance by the Western Regional Control Centre, FALCON EYE, describing the recoveries as evidence of the professionalism, vigilance and operational readiness of its personnel.

It noted that the operations align with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to build a technologically driven Navy with enhanced surveillance capabilities capable of denying criminal elements freedom of action within Nigeria’s maritime environment.

The service also said the operations were in line with the operational directives of the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral A.A. Mustapha, aimed at strengthening maritime security through intelligence-led operations, effective deployment of surveillance assets and enhanced collaboration with other security agencies.

Receiving the exhibits, the Deputy Marine Commander of the NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics Luka Yerima, commended the Nigerian Navy for the successful operations and praised the strong working relationship between both agencies.

He called for sustained collaboration to combat illicit drug trafficking and other organised transnational crimes threatening Nigeria’s maritime and coastal communities.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying intelligence-driven operations and strengthening partnerships with security and law enforcement agencies to safeguard the nation’s maritime interests and support national security objectives.
