NCYP urges US lawmakers to reconsider Nigeria’s religious freedom tag

  • Group Warns “Country of Particular Concern” Designation Could Undermine Peace Efforts

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has appealed to the United States Government and its lawmakers to reconsider the push to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged persecution of Christians.

The group made the appeal in a statement signed by its National Public Relations Officer, Christian Oda, aligning with the position of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese.

According to the NCYP, while the killings of Christians in parts of northern Nigeria remain painful and condemnable, labeling Nigeria a CPC could do more harm than good by undermining the Federal Government’s current efforts to foster peace, inclusion, and national unity.

The group commended President Bola Tinubu for promoting inclusivity by appointing Christians, particularly from the North, into key government and security positions. “We are not surprised by this, knowing that the President has consistently proven himself to be a true nationalist, not a religious bigot. This conviction is why the NCYP confidently supported the Muslim–Muslim ticket in 2022 and worked tirelessly for its success,” the statement said.

The NCYP warned that such a U.S. designation could have far-reaching consequences, including restrictions on arms sales and security partnerships, which could weaken Nigeria’s ability to combat terrorism and protect its citizens. “As Christians living in northern Nigeria, we are deeply aware of the trauma our communities have faced over the years. Yet, we also recognize that Muslim communities have similarly suffered grievous losses at the hands of terrorists and bandits,” the group noted.

It cautioned against framing Nigeria’s insecurity as a “Christian genocide”, describing it as an oversimplification that distorts reality and diminishes compassion for all victims, regardless of faith.

The NCYP urged both domestic and international stakeholders to pursue peace through truth, justice, forgiveness, and mutual understanding. “Only through empathy, balance, and a shared commitment to peace can Nigeria achieve lasting reconciliation and progress,” the group concluded.
