NHRC condemns unlawful arrest of Kebbi journalist, hails release and compensation

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the unlawful arrest and detention of Kebbi journalist, Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, describing it as a violation of press freedom and human rights.

Kangiwa was detained after exposing the poor state of Kangiwa General Hospital in Kebbi State. Following public outcry, he was released, with the Kebbi State Government paying him ₦200,000 in compensation.

NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, commended the compensation as a positive step but stressed that a public apology was also constitutionally required. He added that the suspension of the State Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, over negligence, was a welcome move.

Ojukwu reiterated the vital role of journalists in holding public officials accountable and urged the Kebbi State Government to prioritize citizens’ welfare by ensuring functional healthcare services.

He assured that the Commission would continue to monitor the situation to safeguard human rights and hold violators accountable, while commending the media and stakeholders for amplifying the case.
