Nigeria aims to become China’s leading net exporter within five years

Nigeria has set an ambitious target to become the top net exporter to China within the next five years, surpassing Brazil, which currently holds the position with a net export value of $104.32 billion.

This strategic goal was unveiled by the Director General of the China-Nigeria Partnership, Joseph Tegbe, at the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo held in Abuja. Tegbe highlighted Nigeria’s current export value of $22.6 billion, emphasizing that the dynamics are poised for change as the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and China deepens into a strategic partnership.

Tegbe noted that as of December 2023, trade between Nigeria and China stood at over $22 billion. In contrast, Brazil’s exports to China in the same period reached $105 billion, making it a net exporter, while China’s exports to Brazil were valued at $59 billion.

“Our goal as a nation is clear: in the next five years, we aim to significantly increase Nigeria’s trade volume with China and position Nigeria as a net exporter,” Tegbe stated. He further underscored Nigeria’s pivotal role in Africa, remarking, “Industrializing Nigeria means industrializing 25% of Africa. A stable and economically sound Nigeria is vital to a prosperous Africa.”

Capacity Building and Economic Collaboration

Tegbe also highlighted the ongoing efforts to build human capacity as part of the strategic partnership. He revealed that Chinese tech giant Huawei trains approximately 1,200 Nigerians annually. In addition, 30 Nigerian government officials from various ministries and agencies are currently in China undergoing intensive training focused on governance and economic development.

“The partnership is yielding tangible results,” Tegbe said. “The knowledge transfer facilitated by Huawei and other Chinese institutions is a testament to the deepening relationship between our two nations.”

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Speaking at the Expo, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, emphasized the importance of the exhibition in advancing the outcomes of the Beijing Summit Forum. He commended the collaboration between entrepreneurs and innovators from both nations, particularly in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, green energy, and environmental conservation.

“This exhibition is a platform to promote industrialization and agricultural modernization in Nigeria, fostering in-depth cooperation across various fields,” Yu stated.

Investment in Infrastructure and Technology

Mr. Fang Qiuchen, Chairman of the China International Contractors Association, announced that Chinese firms are mobilizing substantial funds to invest in Nigeria’s infrastructure. This investment drive is a direct outcome of the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.

“We are committed to working together on infrastructure projects, renewable energy, and digital smart cities,” Fang explained. “China is collaborating with African and Chinese development banks to finance large-scale infrastructure projects in Nigeria, providing the capital and technology necessary for sustainable development.”

Fang highlighted the potential for cooperation in emerging sectors such as digital infrastructure, the blue economy, and agricultural modernization. He also emphasized the growing focus on renewable energy projects, including solar and wind, as key drivers of clean energy development in Nigeria.

“The integration of digital technology with infrastructure development presents vast opportunities for both nations. By leveraging advanced technologies like big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, we can accelerate Nigeria’s transformation and foster mutually beneficial growth,” Fang added.

Expanding Strategic Partnerships

Fang concluded by announcing plans to host the China Engineering and Technology Expo and the China-Nigeria Infrastructure Cooperation Forum in Abuja later this year. These events aim to enhance mutual understanding and explore new areas of collaboration between Chinese and Nigerian engineering companies.

“With the elevation of our bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, we are confident that our joint efforts will yield even greater success in the near future,” Fang remarked.

The China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo serves as a critical platform to solidify China-Nigeria relations, driving sustainable economic growth and fostering closer collaboration in infrastructure, technology, and trade.
