 Police rescue suspect from mob action over alleged murder in Anambra

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued a 30-year-old man, identified as Leberechi, from an attempted mob lynching in Okpoko, near Onitsha, after he was accused of murdering a 25-year-old male and concealing the victim’s dismembered body in a refrigerator.

The incident occurred on 2 September 2025. Police officers attached to the Okpoko Division intervened and found the suspect unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital under armed guard to prevent escape.

At the crime scene, detectives reportedly discovered decomposed body parts hidden in a refrigerator. The remains have since been evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive investigation.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga urged residents to remain calm and assured the public that justice will be pursued in accordance with the law.
