The House of Representatives has presented a cheque of ₦18 million to the Enugu State Government to support victims of the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred on January 25 at Ugwu Onyeama, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
According to Spokesman, House of Representatives Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, described the explosion as a national tragedy, emphasizing the House’s commitment to standing with affected communities in times of crisis. He was represented by the Enugu State Caucus, led by Rep. Nnolim Nnaji and comprising Reps. Martins Oke, Dennis Agbo, Mark Obetta, Anayo Onwuegbu, and Chimaobi Atu.
Speaking on behalf of the Speaker, Rep. Nnaji stated, “We commiserate with the Government and people of Enugu State over this unfortunate incident. This ₦18 million donation is to support the state’s ongoing efforts to alleviate the suffering of victims and their families. The Speaker sends his heartfelt condolences and assures continued support from the House.”
Governor Peter Mbah, in his response, lauded Speaker Abbas for his compassionate leadership and expressed deep gratitude for the House’s solidarity. “This gesture will go a long way in cushioning the effect of the tragedy. We will ensure the funds are transparently and equitably distributed to those affected,” he affirmed.
The donation underscores the 10th House of Representatives’ dedication to responsive and people-centered governance, reinforcing its role in national solidarity and community support during times of disaster.
