President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday led the nation in honouring Nigeria’s fallen heroes at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) held at the National Cenotaph, Eagle Square, Abuja.
The solemn ceremony provided an opportunity for national reflection and gratitude in remembrance of officers and men of the Armed Forces who laid down their lives in defence of Nigeria’s peace, unity and sovereignty. President Tinubu was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who laid a wreath on his behalf in tribute to the fallen personnel.
Also paying tribute were the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and other Service Chiefs, alongside the Inspector-General of Police.

The wreath-laying symbolised the enduring commitment of the Armed Forces and security agencies to the ideals of patriotism, selflessness and loyalty to the nation.
The event attracted top government officials and dignitaries, including the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio; the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun; the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa; members of the Federal Executive Council; heads of security agencies; members of the diplomatic corps; senior serving and retired military officers; and representatives of the Nigerian Legion.
Together, the dignitaries paid homage to the men and women whose ultimate sacrifices continue to inspire national unity, resolve and collective remembrance.
