President Bola Tinubu has pledged that his administration will ensure that companies engaged in mineral exploration prioritize the health and safety of Nigerians and their host communities.
According to his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Chief Ajuri Ngelale, President made this commitment while receiving a presentation from Course 32 participants of the National Defence College (NDC) titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035.” on Thursday in Abuja
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of cracking down on illegal mining activities, directing security agencies to intensify their efforts in this regard. He commended the NDC participants for their thorough research on the mining industry’s potential to contribute to national security and development.
“I have listened carefully to your presentation on the theme. I could see the intellectual depth of the work done to help the nation, and I must say thank you to all of you,” Tinubu said. He highlighted the significance of diversifying Nigeria’s economy and noted the challenges posed by illegal miners, stating that military involvement is crucial in addressing these issues.
The President also expressed concern over the health implications of mining activities on communities, stressing the need for medical centers and other facilities to safeguard the lives and well-being of those living near mining areas.
Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, Commandant of the NDC, acknowledged the President’s support in advancing the institution’s infrastructure, positioning it among the top defense colleges globally. However, he appealed for assistance in completing the college’s permanent site in Abuja, which has remained unfinished since 2010.
The NDC Course 32 includes 111 participants drawn from various sectors, including the Nigerian military, police, ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as international participants from 19 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. The college focuses on in-depth studies of factors affecting national security and development and serves as the ECOWAS training Centre of Excellence for Peace Support Operations.
