USAID launches Africa creative blueprint to boost Nigeria’s creative industry

The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has announced a strategic partnership with Ascend Studios to bolster Nigeria’s creative sector. This initiative, unveiled on Monday, aims to strengthen the country’s Nollywood industry and empower youth through capacity building, mentorship, and economic opportunities.

Dubbed the Africa Creative Blueprint, the $3.5 million program will involve key collaborators, including Paramount Nigeria, Venture Garden Group, and music executive Ralph Simon. According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, the initiative will equip Nigerian creatives with the skills and resources needed to compete globally and elevate the nation’s creative output to the international stage.

“This partnership will enhance Nigeria’s capacity as a leading player in the creative economy and encourage global partnerships,” said USAID Nigeria Mission Director Melissa Jones. “We aim to create high-quality, commercially viable content capable of competing on the world stage.”

While Nigeria’s film industry has gained international acclaim, structural challenges such as limited distribution channels, subpar production quality, weak intellectual property protections, and insufficient talent development hinder its full potential. The Africa Creative Blueprint seeks to address these gaps through comprehensive training and hands-on project experience.

The program will train 3,500 youth across six cities—Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Kano, Benin, and Asaba. Additionally, it will develop a skilled workforce of 200 to produce a 13-episode, music-infused TV drama that promotes social change and inclusive growth.

Applications are now open for various roles, including directors, writers, producers, editors, designers, actors, and production finance professionals.

“This collaboration marks a turning point for the Nigerian creative sector,” said Inya Lawal, CEO of Ascend Studios. “Through this initiative, we are building world-class talent and infrastructure to spotlight African stories on the global stage.”

The Africa Creative Blueprint represents a major step in fostering sustainable growth for Nigeria’s creative economy and elevating its global impact.
