Zulum warns residents, supports airstrikes on suspected insurgent hub

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has warned residents against aiding insurgent groups, as intensified military operations target suspected logistics networks in Nigeria’s North-East.

The warning follows recent air operations by Operation Hadin Kai, which struck the Jilli general area in Gubio Local Government Area on April 11, 2026.

Jilli, a border community linking Borno State and Yobe State, has come under renewed scrutiny as a suspected corridor for insurgent activities. The governor stated that the Jilli market, along with the nearby Gazabure market, had been shut down by the state government five years ago due to persistent security threats.

Zulum, who confirmed he had been fully briefed on the operation, described the market as a “notorious hub” allegedly used by insurgents and their supply networks.

He disclosed that consultations are ongoing with the Yobe State Government and military authorities, highlighting a coordinated regional strategy to curb insurgency and prevent the re-establishment of militant strongholds along border communities.

The governor stressed that decisions regarding the reopening of markets or resettlement of displaced communities in conflict-affected areas are based on comprehensive security assessments conducted in collaboration with the military and relevant agencies.

Reaffirming his administration’s position, Zulum emphasised that the protection of civilians remains a top priority. However, he warned that individuals found providing any form of support to insurgents—including shelter, intelligence, or logistics—would face severe consequences.

He further urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces by providing credible information, noting that community support is essential to dismantling insurgent networks and restoring lasting peace in the region.
