Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello has apologized to Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, for missing a previous court appearance in his trial over alleged financial crimes totaling ₦80.2 billion.
Bello’s counsel, J.B. Daudu SAN, tendered the apology on December 13, 2024, stating that the absence was not intended as contempt but a procedural move to challenge the court’s jurisdiction. He assured the court of Bello’s respect for the judiciary and commitment to appear at all future hearings.
Bello faces a 19-count charge, including allegations of money laundering and criminal breach of trust, offenses under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended). The charges involve purported fraudulent transactions between 2016 and 2023, with billions of naira and foreign currency allegedly laundered through multiple companies.
During the hearing, Daudu requested bail on reasonable terms, commending the prosecution, led by Dr. Kemi Pinheiro SAN, for their professionalism and cooperation in streamlining the proceedings. Pinheiro also acknowledged Bello’s apology and emphasized the EFCC’s role as a professional, non-persecutory body.
Justice Nwite granted Bello bail under strict conditions, including a ₦500 million bond and two sureties with properties within the court’s jurisdiction. Bello must also deposit his international passport and submit an affidavit of means.
Pending the fulfillment of bail conditions, Bello will remain in custody at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kuje. The trial is set to continue on February 24, 28, and March 6, 7, 2025.
