15 passengers missing, one dead as boat capsizes in Njuwa community

The National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) Yola Operations Office on Friday confirmed a heart-wrenching boat accident that unfolded near the peaceful Njuwa community.

Njuwa community nestles itself along the picturesque banks of the River Benue, found within the jurisdiction of the Yola South Local Government Area in Adamawa State.

According to the agency, initial investigations into this unfortunate incident have unveiled a grim reality.

NEMA added that the ill-fated vessel, designed to ferry passengers, tragically bore the weight of 23 souls on that fateful day and in the face of adversity, the resilient spirit of humanity emerged, as seven individuals were fortunate enough to be plucked from the treacherous waters through the selfless efforts of local divers.

However, amidst this glimmer of hope, a shadow of sorrow hangs heavy, as the agency confirmed the loss of one precious life in this tragic event. As at the time of this report, the whereabouts of fifteen individuals remain shrouded in uncertainty, adding to the anguish that has befallen the affected families and the entire community.

In response to this distressing situation, NEMA, in a display of unwavering commitment to saving lives, has rallied its resources and expertise. Working in tandem with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) and engaging the support of various other concerned stakeholders, NEMA is orchestrating a meticulously coordinated search and rescue operation. This extensive effort, combining the skills and resources of multiple entities, is resolutely focused on the singular objective of locating and bringing home the missing passengers, providing solace to the grieving families, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected by this unfortunate incident.
