39 young Nigerians begin legislative internship through EU-sponsored programme

The European Union (EU), through its Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Programme Phase II, has launched a legislative internship programme in partnership with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), welcoming 39 young Nigerians. The 10-week internship offers participants hands-on experience in legislative practices at Nigeria’s National Assembly.

Designed to foster skills, engagement, and networking, the programme equips interns with practical knowledge of the legislative process, giving them the chance to work directly with members and staff of the 10th National Assembly.

At the opening ceremony in Abuja, Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation for the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, underscored the EU’s commitment to democratic governance and youth empowerment, stating, “The EU is committed to supporting young Nigerians through this internship, aiming to inspire a new generation of leaders for a more inclusive democracy.”

PLAC’s Executive Director, Clement Nwankwo, also welcomed the interns, emphasizing the programme’s role in strengthening democratic governance. Nwankwo highlighted the unique opportunities for participants to gain skills in legislative research, oversight, and the lawmaking process, enhancing their contribution to Nigeria’s democratic future.

The EU-funded initiative, active since 2018, continues to promote youth participation in governance, building a cadre of professionals dedicated to shaping Nigeria’s democracy.
