House Committee on Air Force at NAF HQ advocates for strengthening operational capabilities through enhanced collaboration

Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Air Force, under the leadership of Chairman Honourable Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, conducted a visit to the Headquarters Nigerian Air Force (NAF) as part of their oversight responsibilities. This visit, in accordance with the provisions of sections 88 & 62(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Order Twenty (B) 13 of the Standing Orders of the 10th House of Representatives, was aimed at fostering a robust relationship between the National Assembly (NASS) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

During the visit, Honourable Rurum emphasized the importance of nurturing a strong alliance between the Committee and the NAF. He highlighted the Committee’s role as a pillar of support and intervention, particularly concerning matters such as budget allocation and implementation, policy adjustments, public perception, transparency, and community engagement. The Chairman emphasized the necessity for open communication and collaboration to understand the current status and challenges facing the NAF, with the ultimate goal of enhancing its operational capacity.

Prior to the Committee’s discussions, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, provided insight into Nigeria’s prevailing security landscape, characterized by fluidity, dynamism, and unpredictability. While noting a decline in terrorist activities in certain regions, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed concern over the escalating rate of kidnappings and hostage-taking incidents, particularly in the Northeast and Northwest. He also highlighted challenges posed by secessionist movements and oil theft in the southeast and south-south regions.

Despite these challenges, Air Marshal Abubakar acknowledged the NAF’s continuous engagement in various intensive air operations across the country, including Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance, Air Interdiction, and Armed Reconnaissance, resulting in notable successes. He credited these achievements to the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, evidenced by recent acquisitions such as the induction of 2 x T-129 ATAK Helicopters.

During the visit, Air Marshal Abubakar also outlined pressing challenges hindering NAF’s effectiveness, including the steep rise in fuel prices and surcharges. He advocated for the NAF’s autonomy in importing Jet A-1 fuel to sustain ongoing air operations. Additionally, he highlighted the need to enhance tactical airlift capability, establish an air operations command and control infrastructure, and bolster Air Defence and Airspace Surveillance capabilities.

The Committee Chairman, accompanied by Deputy Chairman Honourable Rufus Ojuawo and 18 other honourable members, affirmed their commitment to supporting the NAF in addressing these challenges and strengthening its operational capabilities.
