In a significant operation aimed at curbing illicit activities in Nigeria’s maritime domain, the Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER intercepted and apprehended two boats laden with approximately 5,700 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). The operation took place along the Bakana Axis in Rivers State on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
Under the banner of Operation DELTA SANITY, which seeks to combat various forms of criminality including illegal oil bunkering and smuggling, the Nigerian Navy has been actively engaged in patrols and enforcement activities across the Niger Delta region.
According to reports from naval authorities, the interception occurred during a routine patrol conducted by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER. The two boats, suspected to be involved in illegal activities, were swiftly intercepted and detained.
Upon inspection, it was discovered that the boats were carrying a substantial quantity of AGO, also known as diesel, which had been illegally refined. The total volume of the confiscated product amounted to an estimated 5,700 litres.
The illicit refining of petroleum products, particularly in the Niger Delta region, has been a persistent challenge, posing significant environmental risks and economic losses to the nation. These illegal activities often involve crude oil theft, illegal refining operations, and smuggling of refined products.
The successful interception and seizure by the Nigerian Navy represent a notable victory in the ongoing efforts to stem the tide of illegal activities in Nigeria’s maritime domain. Such operations not only disrupt illegal networks but also serve as a deterrent to potential perpetrators.
Naval authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining maritime security and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria’s territorial waters. They have urged the public to support the efforts of the security agencies by providing timely and relevant information that could aid in combating maritime crimes.
The detained boats, along with the confiscated illicit products, have been secured by the Nigerian Navy pending further investigation and legal proceedings. The perpetrators involved in the illegal transportation and refining of petroleum products are expected to face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
Operation DELTA SANITY continues to demonstrate the Nigerian Navy’s resolve to safeguard the nation’s maritime interests and ensure a secure environment for lawful economic activities to thrive.
