The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the European Union (EU) in Nigeria have initiated a project titled “Promoting Small Hydro Power Development and Circular Economy Approaches in Nigeria,” bolstering their assistance to the Nigerian government.
During the project launch, Mohamed Malick Fall, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, emphasized the imperative for bolstered backing in energy transition, job creation, circular economy, and climate action to expedite the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensure inclusivity.
He underscored the United Nations’ unwavering commitment to sustained cooperation with the European Union Delegation and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Representing the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Samuela Isopi, Massimo De Luca, the Head of Cooperation, highlighted the project’s dual objectives: “Small Hydro Power Development for Agro-industry Use in Nigeria” and “Advancing Nigeria’s Green and Just Transition to Net Zero through Circular Economy Practices.” These aims seek to bolster energy accessibility and foster circular economy methodologies to combat pollution and mitigate climate change.

Minister of Power, Adelabu Adebayo, expressed confidence in the project’s potential to not only improve the management of off-grid energy equipment and plastics but also augment agricultural productivity and enhance livelihoods.
The project comprises two main components: “Small Hydro Power Development for Agro-industry Use in Nigeria” and “Advancing Nigeria’s Green and Just Transition to Net Zero through Circular Economy Practices.”
