Customs WMC seizes 177 sacks, 61 kegs of PMS in face of fuel scarcity

In the midst of a nationwide scarcity of petroleum products, the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, has intercepted a significant quantity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). A total of 177 sacks and 61 kegs, each containing 25 litres of PMS, were seized along the Isalu Creek Badagry Waterway en route to Benin Republic.

Speaking at the command headquarters on Friday, May 10, 2024, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, revealed that the interception was made possible through a joint patrol team acting on credible intelligence.

“At about 2330hrs on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, our joint patrol team, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted the movement of two boats suspected to be laden with petroleum products concealed in sacks,” stated Comptroller Bamisaiye.

A meticulous examination of the seized goods at the Command Headquarters uncovered 12,500 liters of PMS, with a total Duty Paid Value estimated at N8,750,000.

Comptroller Bamisaiye emphasized that the actions of the smugglers contravene Section 245 & 254 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023. He issued a stern warning to smugglers, emphasizing the command’s zero-tolerance stance on smuggling activities.

“The economic significance of such seizures during a period of fuel scarcity cannot be overstated. While people are suffering due to artificial scarcity, smugglers are attempting to profit by diverting these essential products outside the country. They must cease these activities or face arrest. We have zero tolerance for such acts,” vowed Comptroller Bamisaiye.

Furthermore, the Customs Area Controller commended the dedication and effort of the officers involved in the interception, highlighting their commitment to duty amidst challenging circumstances.
