ILO Nigeria launches key resources on labour migration governance

The International Labour Organization (ILO) Nigeria has unveiled new knowledge products and resources on labour migration governance during an event at the UN House in Abuja. These resources, based on extensive research, offer crucial data and insights aimed at advancing social justice through the decent work agenda, safeguarding the rights of all workers, including migrants.

Vanessa Phala, Director of ILO Nigeria Country Office, emphasized the importance of labour migration, stating, “Labour migration continues to play a significant role in our national mobility landscape, informing evolving dynamics in global labour markets. Accurate, comprehensive data and statistics are crucial in addressing the challenges and opportunities labour migration presents.”

Paola Pace, representing the Chief of Mission of IOM Nigeria, highlighted the necessity of data in revising legal and policy frameworks to improve working conditions for migrant workers. She called for collective efforts from all partners to enhance the lives of migrant workers.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, represented by the Director of Employment and Wages Department, underscored the need for collaboration. “Migration is an issue that falls within the jurisdiction of many ministries, social partners, international development partners, and civil societies. There is a need for collaboration to make migration a win-win situation for all parties involved,” he stated.

The newly unveiled resources include:

  • Findings from the 2019 Labour Migration Report, developed by the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
  • A study on the working conditions of migrant workers in Nigeria, produced by the Nigeria Labour Congress.
  • A revised Code of Conduct for Private Employment Agencies in Nigeria, created by ILO Nigeria, HuCaPAN, the National Employers Consultative Association, and other partners.

These publications are expected to enhance the understanding and governance of labour migration, contributing to better working conditions and social justice for migrant workers in Nigeria.
