Witness: Emefiele approved contracts, payments for wife, brother-in-law

In the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele, the seventh prosecution witness testified that Emefiele approved contracts and payments to companies owned by his wife and brother-in-law.

Agboro Michael, an investigator with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), told Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court that Emefiele signed and approved contract awards to April 1616 Investment Limited and Architekon Nigeria Limited. These companies are linked to Emefiele’s wife, Margaret, and her brother, Jonathan Omoile.

Michael, part of an inter-agency investigation team including the EFCC, ICPC, Code of Conduct Bureau, DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force, testified under cross-examination by defense counsel Mathew Burkaa (SAN). He confirmed that Emefiele endorsed all contract award documents and approved payments to both companies.

Burkaa presented exhibits F24 to F44, which included letters from the CBN to April 1616 Investments Limited for car supply contracts and corresponding payment requests, all signed by Emefiele. Michael also identified exhibits A1 to A8, containing memos for contracts awarded to Architekon Nigeria Limited for renovations and supply of furniture, approved by Emefiele.

Justice Muazu admitted the exhibits as evidence and adjourned the case until June 25, 2024, for re-examination of the witness. Emefiele faces 20 amended charges including conferment of corrupt advantages, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining by false pretence.
