NNPC Ltd declares state of emergency on crude oil production, calls for collaboration to reduce costs

In a decisive move aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, NNPC Ltd. has announced a state of emergency on crude oil production, urging industry-wide collaboration to streamline operations and cut production costs.

According to Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd. Abuja, Olufemi O. Soneye, the declaration was made by Mr. Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., during his keynote address at the 23rd Nigeria Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition (NOG Energy Week) in Abuja. Kyari emphasized the urgency of addressing longstanding challenges hindering optimal crude oil output in the country.

“We have decided to stop the debate. We have declared war on the challenges affecting our crude oil production. War means war,” stated Kyari. He highlighted existing capabilities that could enable Nigeria to produce up to two million barrels of crude oil per day without additional rigs, underscoring the need for prompt action from all stakeholders.

The initiative, termed a “war,” aims to swiftly overcome barriers such as procurement delays that have plagued the industry. Kyari outlined medium to long-term strategies, including the replacement of aging pipelines and the introduction of a rig sharing program to maximize operational efficiency over extended periods.

In his address, Kyari called upon industry players to collaborate effectively in reducing production costs and achieving targeted production levels. He reaffirmed NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to enhancing domestic gas infrastructure, citing projects like the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) and Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipelines as critical to bolstering energy supply for national development.

Regarding Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Kyari noted NNPC Ltd.’s alignment with national initiatives, including partnerships to establish CNG stations aimed at enhancing accessibility and affordability of clean energy solutions.

The NOG Energy Week opening ceremony featured remarks from international and national dignitaries, including the Secretary General of OPEC and the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, underlining the event’s theme of showcasing investment opportunities and addressing global energy demands.

NNPC Ltd. serves as the Principal Sponsor of the 2024 NOG Energy Week Conference & Exhibition, reflecting its commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in Nigeria’s energy sector.
