New commander appointed to lead petroleum task force amidst crackdown on oil theft

In a decisive move to combat oil theft and pipeline vandalism, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bayonle Kafar Sulaiman as the new Commanding Officer of the Inspector-General of Police Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering (IGP-STFPIB).

According to Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, DCP Sulaiman, renowned for his expertise in task force operations, previously served as the Squadron Commander of Police Mobile Force 20 in Lagos. Under his new role, he is tasked with spearheading efforts to eradicate illegal activities in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, including oil theft, illegal bunkering, and pipeline vandalism.

IGP Egbetokun expressed strong condemnation of these illegal practices, citing their severe impact on the environment, economy, and energy security. He highlighted the significant financial losses and environmental devastation, such as oil spills and habitat destruction, caused by these activities. The IGP mandated the new commander to ensure rigorous enforcement and prosecution of offenders, and to utilize all available resources to prevent economic sabotage in Nigeria’s oil industry.

The IGP also called on stakeholders in the oil sector and the general public to collaborate with the police and other security agencies. He urged them to provide credible intelligence to help uncover and thwart criminal activities within the industry.
