Operation Safe Domain III was officially launched recently at the Multinational Maritime Coordination Center (MMCC) Zone E in Cotonou, Benin Republic. The operation, themed “Protecting the Blue Economy of ECOWAS Zone E through Maritime Security Collaboration,” aims to strengthen maritime security and protect the region’s vital economic interests.

Commodore Aniedi Aniedu Ibok, Director of MMCC Zone E, emphasized the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the myriad of threats in the maritime domain, including sea robbery, piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling. These challenges have hindered economic progress in the region, making the operation’s success critical for the growth of the blue economy.

Operation Safe Domain III seeks to revolutionize maritime security through resource pooling, capacity building, and enhanced cooperation among member states and international partners. The primary objectives include combating maritime crimes through improved equipment, training, and intelligence sharing; promoting information exchange; and creating a secure environment for maritime commerce to flourish.

Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), represented by Rear Admiral MB Hassan, highlighted the operation’s mission to enhance maritime safety across the Gulf of Guinea. The Special Guest of Honour, Minister of National Defence Mr. Fortunet Alain Nouatin, represented by Brigadier General Sanni Bachabi, praised the collaborative efforts that made the operation possible, expressing confidence in its success.

The event was attended by key figures from the maritime sector, including ministers, ambassadors, and naval chiefs from participating countries. The ceremony concluded with a symbolic flag-off and group photographs, signaling a new chapter in maritime security collaboration.

Operation Safe Domain III underscores the importance of international cooperation in securing the maritime domain and advancing the economic prosperity of ECOWAS Zone E.
