Tinubu, Mbasogo ink historic Gulf of Guinea gas pipeline agreement

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo solidified a key partnership on Wednesday with the signing of the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project agreement in Malabo. This landmark accord underscores both nations’ commitment to mutual development through strategic energy collaboration.

The agreement, which encompasses legislative and regulatory frameworks, transit provisions for natural gas, and ownership guidelines for the pipeline, marks a significant step forward in regional energy infrastructure. It also lays down the principles for the establishment and operation of the pipeline, which is set to boost gas exploration and create employment opportunities across the region.

During the signing ceremony, President Tinubu, currently on a three-day official visit to Equatorial Guinea, highlighted the broader implications of the agreement, emphasizing the potential for economic growth and job creation. He noted that their discussions also addressed vital issues such as employment, food security, and conflict resolution mechanisms on the continent.

“We must look inward to solve our problems,” Tinubu stated, drawing parallels with Europe and America’s approaches to conflict resolution. “Instead of the crisis and conflicts we see in places like the Republic of Congo, we need to find solutions within Africa.”

President Tinubu also mentioned the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and security challenges as key topics of discussion, reinforcing the need for collaborative efforts to address the continent’s pressing issues.

President Mbasogo, in his remarks, praised the long-standing bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, urging for deeper cooperation in critical areas. He reiterated Africa’s aspiration for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, affirming Equatorial Guinea’s commitment to working with Nigeria towards achieving this goal.

The agreement was co-signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Equatorial Guinean counterpart, Mr. Simeon Oyono Esono. Other Nigerian officials present at the signing included the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and key ministers overseeing defense, interior, petroleum, and youth development.

The signing ceremony concluded with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges, bolstered by this significant energy partnership.
