Bayelsa State on Monday officially entered Nigeria’s commercial aviation sector as Governor Douye Diri boarded the inaugural operational flight of Pioneer Airlines, becoming the airline’s symbolic “Passenger 1A.”
The historic non-scheduled flight marked the commencement of operations by the airline using one of the ATR 72-600 aircraft acquired by the Bayelsa State Government for regional commercial services.
The aircraft departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 11:10 a.m. after receiving clearance from the control tower, in what officials described as a significant milestone in the state’s economic and infrastructural development agenda.
Piloted by Captain M. Ibrahim alongside First Officer Joyce, a female co-pilot, the flight landed smoothly at the Bayelsa International Airport at approximately 12:15 p.m. after about one hour and five minutes in the air.
Among those onboard with Governor Diri were former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters I, High Chief Collins Cocodia, and other aides.

The launch signals Bayelsa State’s strategic entry into the aviation industry through a partnership arrangement with Pioneer Airlines, a development expected to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate economic activities and improve the state’s internally generated revenue.
Speaking after the inaugural flight, Governor Diri reportedly expressed satisfaction with the airline’s operational standards and service delivery, describing the initiative as part of broader efforts to reposition Bayelsa as an emerging economic and investment destination.
Observers say the development represents another major infrastructural milestone by the Diri administration aimed at boosting tourism, trade and business opportunities while strengthening the state’s integration into Nigeria’s aviation network.
