The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has emphasized that the true measure of a soldier lies in their character and dedication to duty rather than the medals they wear.
This statement was made during the closing ceremony of the 2024 6 Division Inter-Brigade Combat Proficiency Competition, held at the 6 Division Physical Training Obstacle Course Ground in Port Harcourt Barracks.
Represented by Brigadier General Sani Ahmed, Commander of the 6 Division Garrison, Major General Abdussalam lauded the remarkable performances of the officers who participated in the grueling five-day event. The competition tested the physical and mental limits of the participants through various challenges, including a fitness race, map reading, combat swimming, skill at arms, shooting, and obstacle crossing.
The GOC highlighted that the competition was meticulously designed to prepare officers to lead their troops with confidence and resilience in any operational situation. “The expertise, teamwork, and strategic thinking displayed by each participant not only raised the bar for future competitions but also serve as an inspiration and assurance of the Division’s operational efficiency and success,” he stated.
He congratulated the winners, noting that their success is a testament to their hard work, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to the military profession. Major General Abdussalam also encouraged those who did not win to use the experience as a learning opportunity, urging them to train harder and return stronger in future competitions.
The 6 Division Garrison emerged victorious in the competition, scoring 470 points, followed by the 2 and 16 Brigades in second and third place with 460 and 400 points, respectively. The 63 Brigade finished last with 370 points.
The event concluded with the presentation of individual medals, trophies, and a wooden spoon to the deserving formations, followed by group photographs to commemorate the occasion.
