Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District and the visionary behind the Marshall Katung Foundation (MKF), has granted approval for the initiation of the foundation’s second batch of scholarships and bursaries. These financial aids are designed to assist underprivileged students pursuing higher education within his senatorial district.
In an official announcement, Umar Bain, the Administrative Secretary of the Senator, highlighted a primary objective of the foundation: to provide encouragement and financial support to students facing economic challenges in their pursuit of higher learning. The scholarships and bursaries are intended to alleviate the burden of tuition fees and reignite hope among students who may be on the verge of discontinuing their studies due to financial constraints caused by economic hardships.
Bain referenced a profound Chinese proverb that states, “If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.” This sentiment has inspired the foundation’s commitment to nurturing education among students in Southern Kaduna communities, thereby securing a brighter future and fostering sustainable development.
Bain further explained that the foundation’s ongoing efforts extend to various educational initiatives, including the construction and restoration of schools and vocational centers at the local government level, provision of free JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) forms, distribution of books and computers to secondary schools, and the implementation of scholarship programs. All of these endeavors are aimed at making education not only enticing but also accessible to all eager children.
The forthcoming batch of scholarships will be awarded based on merit, with a committee comprising esteemed individuals such as academics, lawyers, civil society members, journalists, and leaders of community associations responsible for the selection process. As a result, the Marshall Katung Foundation is extending an invitation to eligible undergraduate students from the eight Local Government Areas of Kaduna South Senatorial District who are enrolled in public higher institutions across Nigeria. Applications for this year’s scholarship and bursary awards will be accepted through the online portal from Friday, August 25, 2023, until Thursday, August 31, 2023.
