A momentous step towards establishing enduring peace in the region has been achieved by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). Major General Djouma Youssouf Mahamat Itno, the Commander of Sector 2 MNJTF, played a pivotal role in overseeing the transfer of 46 former Boko Haram members to Chadian authorities on August 26, 2023.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the Military Public Information Officer in N’djamena, Chad, the handover ceremony unfolded in Bagasola. Hon. Abdoulaye Mbodou Mbami, the Minister of Public Service and Social Dialogue, represented the Chadian government in accepting these reformed insurgents. This event stands as part of a comprehensive initiative driven by the MNJTF and regional governing bodies. The initiative aims to encourage all militants to renounce violence, seek redemption, and actively contribute to the progress of society.
Major General Itno, in his address, fervently appealed to the remaining factions of Boko Haram to follow the example set by their 46 compatriots and embrace lasting peace. He accentuated the indispensable role that community leaders play in disseminating awareness, countering, and mitigating the extremist beliefs that underpin the insurgent doctrine.
“The time for peace has arrived,” remarked Major General Itno, underlining, “It commences with acknowledging our collective strength. We beseech community leaders to join in fostering this awareness. Together, we possess the capability to uproot extremist ideologies and labor towards sustainable peace and stability.”
The significant event garnered the presence of notable dignitaries, including General Djibrine Ratou, the Governor of Lac province, Hassane Abderamane, the Prefect of the Department of Kaya, and traditional leaders.
This remarkable transfer signifies a potential turning point in the ongoing endeavor to eliminate violent extremism from the region. It underscores the unwavering determination of the MNJTF to ensure enduring serenity.
