A Chinese construction company, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), has donated over 11 tons of food supplies to the Borno State government to assist those affected by the recent catastrophic floods.
The floods, the worst in the state in 30 years, submerged over 50 percent of the state capital, Maiduguri, and surrounding areas. The disaster resulted in numerous deaths, widespread destruction of property, and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents.
Liu Shuai, a representative of CMEC, presented the relief supplies at a brief ceremony in Maiduguri, attended by Governor Babagana Zulum, government officials, and the company’s delegation. Liu emphasized that the donation is part of CMEC’s corporate social responsibility, aimed at easing the suffering of flood victims.
“As a central Chinese enterprise operating in Nigeria for many years, CMEC has been committed to supporting local communities and fulfilling our social responsibilities,” said Liu.
In addition to the food aid, CMEC is set to participate in post-disaster reconstruction, aiming to assist the government and residents of Borno in rebuilding after the devastation.
Governor Zulum expressed deep appreciation for the company’s support, assuring that the state government is committed to timely reconstruction efforts. He also lauded CMEC’s ongoing Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP) project, noting its importance to the socio-economic development of the region, and looked forward to further collaboration with the firm.
