Civic Group BudgIT questions Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over N218.5 million road project

Nigerian civic tech organisation BudgIT has raised concerns over a road project facilitated by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, questioning the cost and the quality of the construction.

According to BudgIT, a 600-metre road, which was constructed under the Federal Co-operative College in Oji River, Enugu State, cost N218.5 million. The original plan, as revealed, was for a 1-kilometre road, budgeted at N150 million. The project, which was poorly executed and fell short of the intended length, has sparked outrage.

BudgIT disclosed that two contractors, Tramstek Ltd and Ice Target Global Ltd, received payments for the project. Tramstek Ltd was paid N66.7 million on June 15, 2023, and another N66.7 million on December 11, 2023. Ice Target Global Ltd received N85 million on December 12, 2023.

“Half a road, twice the cost!” BudgIT remarked, demanding accountability and questioning the integrity of the project. The civic organisation has called for further scrutiny into how public funds were allocated and spent.
