The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims circulating in certain media outlets about the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). In an official statement, the DHQ confirmed that no such appointment exists within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
The current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is on his scheduled 2024 annual leave, during which Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing routine updates to him, as per military protocols. The DHQ emphasized that the Nigerian military remains professionally managed and all service chiefs are actively carrying out their constitutional duties.
The DHQ further condemned the spread of false information, urging media outlets to verify facts with appropriate authorities before publishing. They reassured the public that the COAS is in good health and will soon resume his duties.
In a related development, the DHQ addressed the recent viral video advocating for a military coup, reminding Nigerians that any such action is considered treason under the Nigerian Constitution. The military reaffirmed its unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its commitment to upholding democracy.
The statement also highlighted the military’s dedication to maintaining national peace and security, crediting the support of the President and the efforts of the AFN leadership for the stability currently enjoyed. The DHQ warned that security agencies have been instructed to take necessary measures against those advocating unconstitutional actions.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, called on Nigerians to continue their support for the military, assuring them that victory in safeguarding the nation’s integrity is assured.
