Interest in learning the Chinese language is rising among young Nigerians, with many viewing it as a pathway to employment and career growth. This trend was highlighted at the annual Chinese Language Contest, organized by the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria (CCCN), where 40 contestants competed to showcase their language skills.
Contestants included students from Chinese language schools nationwide, underscoring the language’s growing popularity in Nigeria. Chinecherem Ugwuanyi, a student from the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nsukka, emerged as the grand prize winner, receiving a cash reward of N250,000. Ugwuanyi explained that her motivation to learn Chinese stemmed from a desire to improve her family’s financial situation by securing work as a translator.
“My first motivation is my family,” she shared. “I knew that with a job in translation, I could help provide a better life for them. The beginning was difficult, but dedication helped me succeed.”
Mr. Yang Jianxing, Director of the CCCN, emphasized that the center’s initiatives, including competitions, aim to promote Chinese language proficiency in Nigeria. He noted that learning Chinese can open doors globally, as it is one of the world’s most widely spoken languages, and encouraged Nigerians to consider it as a valuable skill for career advancement.
With increased access to learning centers and programs, Nigerians continue to embrace Chinese language study as a way to enhance their employment prospects and broaden their career horizons.
