IGP confirms readiness for Ondo gubernatorial election, bans quasi-security groups

Ahead of the November 16, 2024, Ondo State Gubernatorial Election, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has assured the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s full preparedness to maintain peace and order across all polling units, wards, and local government areas.

In a statement Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said comprehensive security measures, including personnel deployment, advanced equipment, and specialized units, have been put in place to secure the electoral process.

He added that specialized police units, such as the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, and others, will work with federal security agencies to ensure adherence to the Electoral Act, prioritizing fairness and transparency. Aerial patrols and gunboats will also cover riverine areas to prevent disruptions in all terrains.

IGP Egbetokun emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for election-related violence, warning that individuals or groups attempting to interfere with the process will face strict legal consequences.

He also reinforced a ban on the involvement of quasi-security outfits, including Vigilante Corps and Amotekun, making it clear that election security is the exclusive responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force and federal security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
