NAF to investigates reports of civilian casualty in Zamfara airstrikes

In a significant offensive against escalating banditry in Zamfara State, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out targeted airstrikes in Tungar Kara, located within Zurmi Local Government Area.

In his statement, Director of Public Relations and Information at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force Air Vice Marshal Akinboyewa said the operation, aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts, resulted in the neutralization of numerous bandits who have long terrorized local communities, and the successful rescue of several kidnap victims.

He said while the airstrikes achieved their primary objective of weakening bandit operations and restoring a measure of safety to the region, the NAF has expressed deep concern over reports alleging civilian casualties during the course of the operation.

Akinboyewa said these reports are being taken very seriously, reflecting the NAF’s commitment to the sanctity of human life. He added that the NAF has initiated a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of these claims. The findings will be shared with the public to maintain transparency and accountability.

Akinboyewa said this step underscores the Air Force’s dedication to ensuring that their operations are conducted with the utmost respect for human life and in accordance with international humanitarian standards.

He emphasized the dual mission of the NAF: to combat the threat of banditry while safeguarding the lives of innocent Nigerians. He assured the public that every possible measure is being taken to avoid civilian casualties and to protect civilian infrastructure during military engagements.

He said NAF will collaborate with relevant authorities, including local and international partners, to thoroughly investigate the incident and implement any necessary corrective actions.

This commitment highlights the NAF’s ongoing efforts to balance aggressive anti-banditry campaigns with their responsibility to protect the lives and property of all citizens.

Akinboyewa reaffirmed the NAF’s unwavering dedication to restoring peace and stability in the North West and across the country. He appealed for public cooperation and patience as the investigation proceeds, ensuring that justice and accountability prevail in this critical national security endeavor.
