Amnesty International urges Nigeria government to ensure safety of Hamdiyya Sidi amid trial in Sokoto

Nigerian authorities are being called upon to impartially and transparently investigate threats against Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff and her lawyer, Abba Hikima, as the trial against Sidi continues. She faces charges of “use of insulting or abusive language” and “inciting disturbance” after criticizing Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, expressed concern over the persecution Sidi and her lawyer are facing for exercising their right to freedom of expression. “Apart from facing prosecution, Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff and her lawyer Abba Hikima are receiving threats, including phone calls and confrontations by individuals claiming to be ‘intelligence agents,'” Sanusi stated.

At a recent court hearing, the hostile environment compelled Barrister Hikima to request armed police protection, which the court granted. Both Sidi and Hikima have reportedly been stalked at their hotel and intimidated.

“These actions are a clear abuse of power, aimed at intimidating those who speak out and their defenders. The increasing hostility toward Sidi and Hikima makes their court appearances in Sokoto highly dangerous,” Sanusi added.

Sidi was previously abducted by armed men on November 13, 2024, beaten, and thrown from a moving tricycle, sustaining severe injuries. Amnesty International condemned the Sokoto State government’s heavy-handed approach to dissent, stating that no one should be punished for expressing opposing views.

The organization urged Nigerian authorities to ensure the safety of Sidi and Hikima, especially during court proceedings and their stay in Sokoto. Sanusi also highlighted the need for the government to address the rampant insecurity in eastern Sokoto, where gunmen have been terrorizing communities, instead of suppressing dissenting voices.
