NNPC attributes Buguma wellhead fire to pipeline vandals

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has identified pipeline vandals as the cause of the fire incident at its Buguma Wellhead 008, which is operated by its subsidiary, NNPC Eighteen Operating Ltd (NEOL). The vandals reportedly attempted to compromise the well’s Christmas Tree—a crucial component in controlling oil and gas flow from the well—in order to steal crude oil.

The sabotage resulted in significant damage to the well’s back pressure valve, exacerbating the situation. NNPC Ltd expressed concern over this recurrent pattern of attacks on its infrastructure in the region, noting that since March 2023, there has been a persistent issue of crude oil theft. Vandals have increasingly resorted to extreme measures, including the use of dynamite, to destroy installations and gain illegal access to hydrocarbons.

NNPC Ltd condemned these criminal activities, highlighting the substantial financial burden they place on Nigeria’s economy. The company assured the public of its unwavering commitment to tackling these fires and working to mitigate the economic losses resulting from such incidents. NNPC Ltd is collaborating closely with relevant security agencies to curtail the menace of pipeline vandalism and secure its facilities.

Moreover, NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the communities affected by these acts of sabotage. The company pledged to continue providing necessary relief efforts to alleviate the impact on local residents and to foster stronger community relations to prevent future occurrences.

In a statement, Olufemi O. Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, emphasized the company’s resolve to combat vandalism and ensure the safety and sustainability of its operations. He called for concerted efforts from stakeholders and community members to assist in safeguarding the nation’s critical oil infrastructure.

NNPC Ltd’s proactive approach underscores its role in not only managing the nation’s petroleum resources but also in safeguarding the interests of the communities and the broader economy from the adverse effects of crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
