Amnesty International condemns Borno government’s crackdown on opposition

Amnesty International has strongly criticized the Borno State government for what it describes as a blatant disregard for the rule of law, citing the systematic targeting of opposition figures and their businesses.

The human rights organization condemned the recurring destruction of opposition party posters and billboards, as well as the recent demolition of a building belonging to an opposition figure in Maiduguri under the pretext of addressing illegal construction and encroachment.

According to Amnesty International, the Borno State government’s actions reveal an alarming pattern of political repression and a growing intolerance for dissent. The organization accused the government of unlawfully using state institutions, including the urban planning agency, to stifle opposition voices. “The state authorities have shown a brazen contempt for basic freedoms, making it clear that there is no space for political dissent in Borno,” Amnesty said in a statement.

The rights group emphasized that it is within the fundamental rights of all citizens in Borno State to associate with any political party of their choice without fear of persecution. Amnesty International described the government’s actions as “cruel, appalling, and deeply unjust,” warning that such politically motivated targeting creates a climate of fear and undermines democracy.

The organization called on the Borno State government and security agencies to immediately halt their crackdown on political opponents and respect constitutional and international human rights obligations. It urged authorities to protect, promote, and fulfill the rights of all citizens, ensuring a fair and democratic political environment in the state.
