NIS arrests 51 irregular Malian migrants near Abuja

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has arrested 51 irregular Malian migrants in New Nyanya, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, a border town near the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to an NIS source, the undocumented migrants, aged between 17 and 25, were apprehended in their hideouts following credible intelligence. The operation was carried out to curb illegal migration and enhance national security.

Speaking on the development, NIS Public Relations Officer Akinsola Akinlabi disclosed that 40 of the migrants are male, while 11 are female. He further revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the individuals may have been victims of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

“None of them presented valid travel documents or residence permits during interrogation,” Akinlabi stated, adding that the arrest aligns with the NIS mandate to regulate migration and protect Nigeria’s borders.

He emphasized that the service remains committed to tackling illegal migration while ensuring that those found to be victims of trafficking receive the necessary support. The arrested migrants have been taken into NIS custody for further profiling and investigation, after which appropriate actions will be taken in line with immigration laws.

Akinlabi urged Nigerians to report suspicious migration activities and cooperate with authorities in addressing the challenges of human trafficking and irregular migration. He reassured the public that the NIS will continue to work with local and international agencies to combat illegal entry into the country.
