ECOWAS Parliament seeks to cut airfares for regional integration

Lawmakers of the ECOWAS Parliament are convening in Lomé, Togo, to address the high cost of air travel within West Africa — a challenge identified as a significant barrier to regional integration and economic connectivity.

At the opening session of the parliamentary joint committee meeting, Vice-President of the Togolese National Assembly, Dzereke Yao, welcomed delegates and underscored the urgency of tackling exorbitant airfare costs. He noted that despite West Africa’s vast potential in population, economic growth, and youthful energy, prohibitive travel expenses continue to undermine efforts toward greater regional unity.

“This paradoxical situation merits our attention,” Yao stated, emphasizing that affordable and accessible air transport is essential for strengthening economic and human ties among ECOWAS citizens.

He also lauded President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé for his pan-African leadership, which has reinforced Togo’s position as a reliable partner in advancing ECOWAS initiatives. According to Yao, Togo remains committed to supporting aviation-driven integration through continued investment in infrastructure and enabling policies.

Delegates were urged to ensure that the five-day discussions yield concrete and actionable recommendations. Yao stressed that establishing a competitive and open airspace in the region would unlock broad benefits for citizens and businesses alike.

“Togo’s strategic location and modern facilities position it to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional air mobility,” he added.

He concluded by highlighting the need for sustained political will and collaborative reforms to boost connectivity and open new economic opportunities across West Africa.
