In a swift response to a distress call, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) neutralised over 20 armed terrorists and destroyed 21 motorcycles during an air interdiction operation on 31st May 2025 in Zamfara State. Conducted south of Mai-Galma in Maru Local Government Area, the mission successfully halted a planned large-scale attack on vulnerable communities.
In a statement, Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters, Nigerian Air ForceEhimen Ejodame Air Commodore said intelligence reports revealed the terrorists had killed farmers and abducted civilians, including women and children. Prompted by this information, NAF aircraft under Operation FANSAN YAMMA conducted an armed reconnaissance in the area. Upon sighting over 30 motorcycles carrying armed terrorists, the aircraft faced hostile fire and engaged with precision, destroying the motorcycles and killing several insurgents.
Ground troops quickly moved in to secure the area, confirming the elimination of over 20 terrorists. Unfortunately, two local vigilantes lost their lives and two others were injured during the operation.
NAF expressed deep regret for the vigilantes’ deaths and pledged continued collaboration with local communities to ensure safety and security. Efforts to rescue the abducted villagers remain ongoing.
Reaffirming its commitment to strict rules of engagement and the Nigerian Air Force Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMRAP), the NAF assured the public that measures are in place to protect civilians while intensifying efforts to combat banditry in the region.
