Eid-el-Kabir: Fire chief urges caution in festive cooking

The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Engr. Abdulganiyu Jaji, has urged Nigerians to take extra precautions during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations to prevent fire disasters, especially in kitchens.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Jaji cautioned against overfilling cooking pans with oil while preparing Sallah meals. He advised that oil should never exceed one-third of the pan’s volume to reduce the risk of kitchen fires.

“Cooking is central to our Sallah festivities, but it also brings heightened risks,” he said. “We urge everyone, particularly women who traditionally oversee these meals, to prioritize safety.”

He further recommended that households equip their kitchens with fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and smoke detectors. Stoves and electrical appliances should be switched off before leaving the kitchen, he emphasized.

Jaji also highlighted the importance of roasting animals in open spaces and storing gas cylinders outside the kitchen to prevent hazards. He urged parents to keep children away from open flames and matches.

Beyond domestic safety, Jaji cautioned road users, especially tanker and trailer drivers, to maintain safe speeds and follow traffic regulations. He also urged waterway travelers to avoid overloading boats and to be mindful of water currents during the holiday rush.

“The Federal Fire Service is ready to respond at any time, but our real goal is to help Nigerians celebrate safely and avoid emergencies,” he said. He reassured the public that fire service personnel remain on high alert throughout the holiday period.

Finally, Jaji encouraged Nigerians to report fire outbreaks or emergencies promptly using the nearest fire station or official emergency hotlines.

“This season is about peace, unity, and gratitude,” he concluded. “Let’s ensure it remains joyful and incident-free.”
