The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its dedication to environmental sustainability in commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, themed “Beat Plastic Pollution.” This year’s theme highlights the dangers of plastic waste to public health, biodiversity, and fragile ecosystems.
In a statement, Spokesman, House of Representatives Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr said the 10th House, guided by Agenda 8 of its Legislative Agenda (2023–2027), has maintained a strong focus on environmental governance. Of the 899 bills passed in its first two years, 27 (3.0%) directly address environmental issues.
Recent progress includes the passage of the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill, sponsored by Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Rep. Terseer Ugbor. This legislation targets wildlife crime and supports biodiversity preservation.
The House is also reviewing key environmental laws, including amendments to the Environmental Impact Assessment Act, the National Park Service Act, and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency Act. Efforts to curb single-use plastics, especially in urban areas, are under consideration to address growing threats to health and sanitation.
Rep. Mike Etaba, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating:
“Environmental protection is not a matter of convenience but an obligation to future generations. On this World Environment Day, we reaffirm our resolve to strengthen Nigeria’s environmental laws and institutions like NESREA, ensuring our compliance with international environmental commitments.”
The 10th House of Representatives remains committed to passing laws that promote sustainable development, build climate resilience, and ensure a healthier environment for all Nigerians.
