Akwa Ibom commissioner resigns over governor’s party switch

In a move highlighting the ongoing political realignment in Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Ini Ememobong has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port. Ememobong’s resignation comes in the wake of Governor Umo Eno’s decision to leave the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC), prompting a broader reshuffle within the state executive council.

In his resignation letter, Ememobong expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve in two critical ministries under Governor Eno’s leadership. He described his time in the cabinet as “enlightening” and “profoundly valuable,” citing the significant experience and exposure he gained during his tenure.

The former commissioner’s decision to step down was prompted by the governor’s directive that all political appointees who do not wish to follow him into the APC should tender their resignations. Ememobong, emphasizing his personal convictions, stated that he could not, in good conscience, join the ruling party, thereby making his resignation inevitable.

Ememobong’s exit marks a notable development in the state’s political landscape, reflecting the shifting loyalties and complex political calculations that often accompany party defections. His departure is seen by many as a principled stand in an era where political survival frequently overshadows personal beliefs.

In closing his letter, Ememobong thanked Governor Eno once again for the trust placed in him, as well as the opportunity to contribute to the administration and the state. His resignation is expected to pave the way for a new commissioner aligned with the governor’s political direction as Akwa Ibom continues to navigate this period of political transition.
