Nigeria advances steel development agenda in China

In a strategic push to revitalize its steel industry and deepen industrial cooperation, Nigeria has taken its steel development agenda to China through a high-level working visit led by the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, and the Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Mr. Joseph Tegbe.

The delegation held a series of high-level engagements with leading Chinese industrial and technology firms, focusing on critical infrastructure, manufacturing, and environmental innovation. A key highlight of the visit was a strategic meeting with senior executives of Sino Steel, one of China’s largest and most influential steel conglomerates. Discussions centered on the revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, widely regarded as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrialization and job creation strategy. Talks included technical assessments, operational models, and financing frameworks necessary to restore the plant to full operational capacity.

In a separate engagement, Mr. Tegbe met with the leadership of Jingye Steel, one of China’s foremost private steel manufacturers with a global footprint. The meeting explored the prospects of establishing integrated steel mills in Nigeria, aimed at bolstering local production capacity and supporting key sectors such as infrastructure development, automotive manufacturing, and construction.

As part of the working visit, the Minister for Steel Development led Nigerian officials on an inspection tour of Jingye Steel’s production facilities in Hebei Province, to gain firsthand insight into the company’s advanced manufacturing processes and operational models.

In Beijing, the NCSP Director-General also held a productive session with SYS Company, a leading Chinese firm specializing in water engineering, wastewater recycling, and renewable energy. The discussions focused on the deployment of SYS’s sustainable technologies in Nigeria, particularly solutions that convert wastewater into reusable resources and clean energy. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the development of a circular economy that supports energy diversification and climate resilience.

Earlier in the visit, Mr. Tegbe convened a follow-up meeting with executives of CSSC Haishen, advancing prior discussions between the Chinese firm and CPL Ltd, a prominent Nigerian medical and pharmaceutical equipment company. The meeting focused on securing competitive procurement frameworks, facilitating knowledge transfer, and identifying sustainable financing mechanisms to support Nigeria’s healthcare modernization efforts.

According to a statement from the NCSP, these engagements reflect the partnership’s broader mandate to foster transformative cooperation between Nigeria and China. By leveraging China’s industrial and technological expertise alongside Nigeria’s strategic development priorities, the NCSP aims to deliver tangible, cross-sectoral outcomes in steel development, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental innovation. “These high-impact engagements are central to unlocking industrial growth, creating jobs, and building a sustainable future for Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
