Democracy Day: Goodluck Jonathan Foundation urges renewed commitment to democratic values

The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) has commemorated Nigeria’s Democracy Day with a call for deeper commitment to democratic principles and inclusive governance.

In a message released on Wednesday, the Foundation paid tribute to patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice to secure Nigeria’s return to civil rule. It also celebrated citizens who continue to contribute to the nation’s unity, development, and democratic consolidation.

“As we mark another milestone of civil governance, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing democratic values, fostering dialogue, and supporting peaceful political transitions across Africa,” the statement read.

The Foundation stressed that democracy can only thrive where the rule of law is upheld, institutions remain independent, and government arms perform their duties without interference. It also underscored the need for national unity through mutual understanding and collaboration.

GJF urged Nigerian leaders to make stronger commitments to democratic ideals by building transparent institutions, promoting equity, and ensuring all citizens — especially youth, women, and marginalised groups — have a voice. “True democracy is not just about elections. It is about justice, dignity, and governance that works for everyone,” the Foundation stated.
