Amnesty International decries severe insecurity, loss of movement rights in Zamfara

Amnesty International Nigeria has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in Zamfara State, describing the rampant activities of armed bandits as a grave violation of residents’ freedom of movement.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the human rights organisation said major roads across the state are now effectively under the control of armed groups, with movement between towns and villages requiring days of coordination and military escort.

Among the high-risk routes cited are Mayanchi–Gumi, Magami–Dansadau, Kauran Namoda–Nahuce via Bungudu, Kauran Namoda–Shinkafi, Zurmi–Birnin Magaji and Gusau–Mada

“Travel has become a matter of life and death,” Amnesty said, adding that in at least 13 local government areas, entire communities now live in fear of constant attacks, extortion, or abduction.

The organisation reported that residents in several communities have been forced into silence and submission. “People told us that they receive threatening calls demanding millions in ransom or face death. In some villages, fasting and prayer are now regular acts of desperation,” the statement read.

Despite repeated assurances from the Nigerian government that it is addressing the crisis, Amnesty said the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate, with a rising death toll and no clear path to safety for affected populations.

Amnesty International called on authorities to urgently restore security and uphold the rights and dignity of those trapped by violence in Zamfara.
