Liberia’s 178th Independence Day celebration on July 26, 2025, was marked by a solemn tribute to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) for their historic roles in restoring peace during the country’s civil conflict.

The commemoration, held in Monrovia, brought together several West African leaders, including the Presidents of Ghana, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau, as well as senior representatives from Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, reflecting Liberia’s deepening ties within the ECOWAS sub-region.

As part of activities marking ECOWAS at 50, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai presented national honours to ECOWAS and ECOMOG contributing member states—Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone—in recognition of their sacrifices and support during Liberia’s most turbulent years.
